הפריטנדרס הוקמה בשנת 1978 על ידי הסולנית כריסי היינד, הגיטריסט ג'יימס האנימן-סקוט והבסיסט פיט פארנדון. זמן קצר לאחר שהוקמה חתמה הלהקה עם חברת התקליטים העצמאית סייר רקורדס (Sire Records) והוציאה את אלבומה הראשון- Pretenders. שנה לאחר צאת האלבום השני של הפריטנדרטס Pretenders II, פוטר הבסיסט פיט פארנדון בגלל שימוש בסמים, והגיטריסט ג'יימס האנימן סקוט נפטר יומיים לאחר מכן כתוצאה מהתקף לב הקשור לסמים. לכתם של צמד המייסדים גרם לכך שכריסי היינד תישאר במשך כל השנים ככותבת השירים העיקרית והדמות המוכרת ביותר של הלהקה.
